Barbara was devastated when she received Morris’ letter.  Not only was he calling off the wedding, but he was being called up to serve in the War and worst of all, he wanted the ring back.  Barbara writes in her memoirs “I couldn't eat, sleep or study. All I did was cry and cry.”
