Baptist Church at Salzburg

We got up early as church started at 9:30 in Salzburg. After breakfast we left and arrived at church early. We sat neat the back because of the three children and the church was packed. I would say it held 300. They even put up some extra chairs and a group of young people came in and stood up and sat in the windowsills in the back. After 20 minutes about 35 children left for children’s church so everyone then had a chair. Its’ a very pretty church and the Southern Baptist built it. The services lasted 1 hour and 40 minutes! All in German! After the services people just stood around and talked and talked. Then at 11:45 one of our missionaries Ray Benfield held an English speaking service. They asked us to join them but it was a little too much! Someone invited us downstairs to the youth center for lunch so we decided to join them. We had a frankfurter, potato salad, semmels, drinks and several kinds of deserts. We finally left and went back to where we stayed to change clothes and get our suite cases.

By this time it was misting but we decided to drive up to Berchtesgaden to take the tour of Hitlers “Eagles Nest”. It was raining too much to take the lift up the mountain, and by the time we got to the top of the mountain were we got the bus to go up to the “Eagles Nest”, it was raining too hard to go. I did get some postcards and that’s about all.

We got home and fixed hamburgers and French fries for supper. Oh, a lot of the people at church this morning were from the Austrian Baptist churches. In part I saw Gunther from Bad Ischl and he said his whole congregation got on a bus and was there. The paster from here in Linz and a large crowd from here were also there. There were three different choir specials. One choir was from Bad Ischl (I recognized several of the people.) There was also a small orchestra which played 3 different specials throughout the service. Even though it was a long service I enjoyed it.
