The new two room schoolhose
At the January 8th, 1916 there was a school board meeting which “All teachers who can possibly attend, will not only derive pleasure but benefit from the following very interesting program.” Miss Abbie Stokes led a discussion session.
At the March meeting of the School Board agreed a request by Shiloh patrons to increase the principal’s salary to $10. The matter of a new building was discussed but no action taken. The new building was again brought up in the May School Board meeting and “it was agreed that the plans formerly submitted by Mr. Pardee were acceptable and it was agreed to have estimates of the probable cost of the building made by the next meeting of the board.” In June it was reported:
The Shiloh trustees and a number of citizens called and discussed the matter of erecting a new school building. It was agreed to have estimates made by contractors of the expense of the building with the hauling of the lumber and supplies to be done by the people of the community and to decide later upon the building.
In the matter of Moores Pond colored school it was agreed to secure a deed to their school site and if practical to have the old white [Shiloh] school building moved on to their lot and put up in good condition.
It is not clear as to when the school board approved the construction of the new Shiloh school building but in August it was reported that Superintendent Brinson and his family visited Shiloh to see the new schoolhouse built by McIver & MacKay and had a pleasant picnic dinner. McIver & MacKay were prominent businessmen in Ocala having one of the largest stores in the city taking an entire block which, “With the exception of dry goods and drugs they deal in all kinds of goods and building materials.” They also operated a funeral home.
