Truck farming was the primary industry in Marion County which was sometimes referred to as “the vegetable basket of the east”.

For the 1916-1917 school year attendance at Shiloh was doing so well that two teachers were appointed, Miss Abbie Stokes and Miss Mary Gladney.  Abbie’s predecessor, Carrie Sigmon, younger sister Sallie Sigmon begin teaching at Lowell school at a salary of $60. In November and December the board allocated an extra $10 a month to Miss Abbie.
