Shiloh School
1923-1932

The Shiloh school operated much the same the following years, attendance varied, some years with more, some with less. Children that had attended Shiloh school grew up and had children of their own who attended. In 1932 Rosalie and Wilbur Mixson’s two sons Adrian and Morris (my father) attended Shiloh, Adrin in the 2nd grade and Morris in the 1st grade. With attendance dwindling,  Morris was the last 1st grade student to attend school at Shiloh. With improved roads and school buses, students from Shiloh went to school in Micanopy or Reddick.  Morris is buried in the Shiloh cemetery a couple hundred feet from the schoolhouse that he attended in the first grade.

Epilog

I find it amazing that my grandmother, Rosalie Anderson Mixson, kept the postcards from Miss Abbie throughout all one hundred and three years of her life. After Dad died in 2020 my sister and I were going through boxes that Mom had stored in their closet. Mom and Dad never threw away old papers. Mom was very organized, storing everything in shoe boxes or plastic containers. There was a box of Mom and Dad’s letters when they were dating in 1949, a large plastic container with sixty years of birthday and Christmas cards, all of my and my siblings elementary school report cards, and more. There, tucked away on the top shelf was a plastic bin labeled, “Grandma Mixson”. I pulled it down and opened it, finding it contained the last of Grandma’s papers, old photos and documents, things she treasured the most, and there among them were the postcards from Miss Abbie.
