Some list John Henry Mixson as son of John Mixson but I do not believe this is the case. He was not listed in John Mixson’s probate records and was not listed in Mary Mixson’s (wife of John) will. John Henry Mixson did live in Barnwell District at the same time as the above children.

Notes:
U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 lists William Joyce Mixson, b. 1797, marrying in 1815 Sarah Ann Johnson, b. 1800.
* Numerous records including The Mixon-Mixson Family (Vol 1), by John Leslie Mixson which was the initial foundation of my Mixsonian website, list William Joyce dying in 1862 but a In Chancery court filling at Barnwell Court house dated January 1, 1853 states “that on or about the day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty two William J. Mixson, departed this life intestate”.[1]
Names listed in the court filing:
Sarah Ann Mixson, widow of William Joyce Mixson#707
11 Children:
1. W. Joyce Mixson#716, (William Joyce Mixson, Jr.)
2. John H. (Hanson) Mixson#717
3. Jerusha Hanson Mixson#717 wife of Joseph Neilson
4. Mary Elizabeth Mixson#721 wife of Joseph H. Stokes
5. Eliza Ann Mixson#722

9. Eugenia J. Mixson, (Josephine Mixson#728)
10. Esther L. Mixson (Louise Mixson#729)
11. Franklin M. (Frank Maner) Mixson#730
The court filling divided William estate between his wife “Sarah Ann Mixson one third part thereof in value” and the eleven living children, “one eleventh part of two third thereof in value”.
William and Sara had a total of 16 children. Not listed in the 11 above were, Experience#719 died young, Benjamin#720 died 1851, Amos J. Mixson#725, and Samuel Mixson#727 dying before 1852.
John Leslie’s book lists Williams middle name as “John from letters of administration of his estate” but the above court filling (as well as other court documents) has his middle name was “Joyce”.

OBITUARY
Died, at Caledonia, Texas on the 31st December last, in the twenty-third year of his age, BENJAMIN M. MIXSON, son of our estimable fellow citizen, William J. Mixson. The circumstances of his death were exceedingly distressing. A drunken man (or rather brute) went into Mixson’s store on the night of Christmas day, and drawing a pistol, declared his intention of firing into a keg of powder, which by some chance was place in the area, between the counters. Per receiving the obstinate and liquor-crazed man bent upon his purpose, in dispute of all persuasion. Mixson proposed to carry the powder out of doors, and after doing so was in the act of placing it upon the ground, when the other fired from behind him, the load of the pistol taking effect in his leg and inflecting a horrible wound, which in a few days caused his death. Thus has an excellent young man been cut off in the bloom of youth; and it is doubly painful to think that the information of his death was received by his relations and friends in Carolina, at the very moment that they expected a letter from him announcing his arrangements and prospects in life. A letter comes, but it contains the tidings of his death; and, while giving a narrative of the circumstances, encloses a lock of his hair, and written in pencil, the following touching memorial of a son’s affection:
“Dear Mother: By the time you receive these few lines you will be informed of my death. I write to you in the last hour given to me in this world, so that you will know that my thoughts in my dying moments are of the mother I shall leave behind me. The circumstances that will soon cause my death are these: I was accidentally wounded by the discharge of a Pistol, which gave me at first but little uneasiness up to this time. A few moments since I was seized with affection of the heart.”
And so he died in a distant land - industrious, upright, honorable, dutiful, affectionate, Christian! He died in a distant land, but surrounded by friends, whom he had made who (to use their own language) knew him but to love him; who, with the most painful feelings, witnessed his death, and with grief, heartfelt and sincere, mourn his untimely loss!
His remains were consigned to the tomb by his brethren of the Sons of Temperance, and a large concourse of weeping friends, of whose kindness his relations in Carolina will ever cherish the most grateful remembrance.
This imperfect offering to the memory of the departed is presented by one, who in common with our whole community and District, deeply sympathize with his heart-stricken parents. For them we know that no human aid can avail; but God, who has affected, while he requires them to submit, also allows them to fee and to weep. With them we will cherish the memory of their loved and affectionate son - with them we will shed the tear of sorrow over his early grave. Though dead he will live in their constant thoughts and daily devotions, and for them we will entreat that peace and consolation which the world cannot give. E.B.
