1834
By 1834 there was growing discontent amongst the Seminole Indians. The Key West Enquirer reported:
Key West Enquirer, Nov. 8, 1834
From a correspondent at Tampa we learned that Gen. Thompson Indian Agent, had convened the Seminole Indians on the 21st ult. For the payment of their annuity and adjustment of claims against them, for property taken and destroyed by them – and also for the purpose of holding a talk and making arrangements/preparatory to their emigration to the West the ensuing March. The result of the conference had not as yet reached Tampa, on the 20tth ult. Considerable dissatisfaction was manifested among the lower tribes, at leaving their ceded country; and many express a determination to submit to the white man’s laws, rather than go, - while others, in considerable numbers, were removing to the Southern extremity of the Peninsula, to conceal themselves, and be out of reach at the time of removal. The head chief of the nation, Micanopy, a churlish, stupid, insolent old fellow, weighing about 250, appears the most clamorous against complying with the condition of a treaty, solemnly ratified by commissioners of his nation, chosen for the purpose, who had previously examined, and were highly pleased with the country assign them.
Our correspondent adds in a postscript: “The mail has this moment arrived. The Indians have, opened and all, refused to go.—What steps government will take upon this extraordinary course, remains yet to be seen.”
