In 1832 a newly formed Columbia County was carved out the northern portion of Alachua County taking with it the town of Newnansville. Being the largest town in the county at the time, Newnansville was designated the county seat for Columbia County and Alachua. This presented a problem for Alachua, for its county seat was now in a different county. This persisted until 1839 when Newnansville was returned to Alachua County and Columbia County seat moved to the growing settlement of Alligator Town which was changed to Lake City in 1859.
